A MAN spat at officers after he was put into a police car following a domestic incident at his home, a court heard.
Wrexham Magistrates Court heard that Darius Ceponis, 33, was already serving a suspended prison sentence for criminal damage and battery when he spat at PC2844 Evans on Bennions Road in the town on February 20.Justin Espie, prosecuting, said police were called to a breach of the peace at the property.
Ceponis became agitated as he was escorted to the police car, and when inside he started screaming and banging the window of the vehicle.
PC Evans went to calm down Ceponis, who spat at him several times.
Ceponis pleaded guilty to assaulting a police constable in the execution of his duty.
Ceri Evans, defending, said that Ceponis had suffered panic attacks, anxiety and depression since last June and was taking medication.
He had stayed away from alcohol, Miss Evans said, but on the night of the offence his partner had invited friends over, he had got drunk and reacted badly to the alcohol.
Ceponis realised that spitting at police was a “disgraceful act”, Miss Evans said, and had apologise in his interview the next day.
“He was ashamed that he had stooped to such a level,” she added.
District judge Gwyn Jones sentenced Ceponis to activate the 150-day sentence for the previous offence and added a further 30 days for the assault.
No compensation was awarded to the officer due to the custodial sentence, but Ceponis must pay an £80 surcharge on his release and will be subject to supervision for a year.
