A convicted killer who spent a decade on the run after attacking a man faces jail.
Jason Patrick Humble, 51, denied a charge of attempted murder over an incident in Commercial Street, Ogmore Vale, Bridgend, on December 2, 2006.
But, appearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday, he admitted unlawfully wounding Steven Hatch with intent.
His pleas of not guilty to attempted murder and to an allegation that he was armed with an axe that day were accepted by the prosecution.
Prosecutor Matthew Roberts said: “The matter is of some antiquity and the memories of witnesses have faded.
“While the original case was that he was the man with the axe [not another man at the scene], and that he struck the first blow, in the light of the evidence now available to the prosecution a decision has been taken to accept the plea offered.”
Crimewatch appeals
Recorder of Cardiff Judge Eleri Rees said any judge passing sentence on Humble will have to consider a previous 12-year term once passed on him for manslaughter.
Humble, of no fixed address, was said to have absconded after being remanded on bail in 2006 and to have “been at large” for the past decade.
He was arrested in Newtown, Powys, on December 31 last year having been the subject of numerous Crimewatch appeals while he was a fugitive.
The judge called for an up-to-date medical report on Mr Hatch before sentence is passed on May 4.
Humble was remanded in custody.
