AN “idiotic" 19-year-old accused of driving at nearly 80mph in a 30mph zone on the wrong side of the road as he fled from police, has been spared custody.
Martin Roberts, of Ffordd Maes Barcer, Caernarfon, admitted dangerous driving and having no insurance and licence.
Judge Philip Harris-Jenkins told him at Caernarfon crown court: ”This was a serious course of dangerous driving where you drove at high speeds, on the wrong side of roads, taking blind bends on the wrong side and approaching speeds of up to 95mph.”
Luckily no-one was hurt.
He added: ”Your behaviour on this occasion was idiotic.”
But Judge Harris-Jenkins said the teenager was of previous good character and he imposed a twelve months suspended custodial term with 200 hours unpaid work.
He was banned from driving for two years with an extended test ordered.
“I am giving you an opportunity – do not waste it,” the judge said to Roberts.
Prosecutor Elen Owen said, on February 9, Roberts drove the wrong way around a roundabout and joined the A55 where he reached 95mph.
He eventually stopped at Felinheli.
There were three occupants of his friend’s Ford Escort and Roberts said he “panicked” when he saw police.
James Coutts, defending, said: ”It’s a source of shame to him and his mother that he finds himself having acted in a very stupid and dangerous manner.
"He’s committed his first criminal offence and it’s a very serious offence.”
Mr Coutts said :”He came to his senses, he pulled over and stopped.”
Counsel said his client had found it difficult to cope following his brother’s recent death.
Roberts had lost his job because of the pursuit.
