CHANGES to bin collections in Conwy could cause a “health and safety nightmare” according to a Colwyn Bay business owner.
Graham Gibbons, who owns G.S Gibbons TV shop in Conway Road, says that rubbish is strewn all over the alleyway behind his premises because the bins are overflowing after just one week, and he fears the situation will become much worse when council plans are implemented to collect the bins every three weeks.
“Every week, there is piles and piles of rubbish everywhere at the back of the shop, “ said Graham. “There’s seagulls ripping open bags and I’m fed up of seeing nappies, food tins and all manner of things strewn all over the place. “I’ve complained to the council over and over again, they said they’d install cameras but have yet to do so. This problem is only going to get worse, and people fly-tip here as well to add to the mess.
“There’s already seagulls and foxes picking at the rubbish and it won’t be long before it’s rats as well, it’s a health and safety nightmare and I’m fed-up of it.”
A Conwy Council spokesperson confirmed that officers are aware of fly-tipping issues in the area and are working with businesses and residents to resolve the matter.
A spokesperson for Mayfair Hair and Beauty Salon, which is next door to Graham’s business said: “The road and car park behind the shops is a mess because of the rubbish from the properties down here. “The council send people round to clear it up, but that costs money too doesn’t it? And it doesn’t resolve the problem. It needs sorting out, it’s disgusting.”
