Man’s best friend is the most persecuted pet in Wales, according to shocking new figures revealed by RSPCA Cymru.
According to the charity, 2015 saw officers carry out 1,427 investigations into cruelty towards dogs in North Wales – more than three times the number of investigations carried out into cats (420).
Across Wales, the RSPCA secured 89 convictions in magistrates court, a 100% success rate.
RSPCA Cymru’s superintendent Martyn Hubbard said: “People think of dogs as man’s best friend but these statistics tell a different story.
“They are by far the most abused animal in Wales and we investigate more complaints related to them than any other species.
“Our inspectors have been utterly shocked by the level of neglect. It is horrifying to think how these animals must have suffered.”
During 2015 the charity dealt with a total of 2,255 animal cruelty cases across the region – including a horrifying one involving a neglected Flintshire dog who was a third under his ideal body weight.
Trojan was found very dirty and dejected and had an extremely thick coat of fur.
But he weighed just 12.3kg and a vet described him as being severely emaciated, a third under his ideal body weight with virtually no muscle on his body.
Trojan, now named Monty, has been rehomed.
Superintendent Hubbard said: “It is encouraging that some of the figures are down on last year.”
He added: “Yet even if some of the overall numbers are lower, the level of depravity we have seen in 2015 continues to be a concern and is as bad as previous years.”
