A “controlling” man who was said to have pulled his girlfriend’s hair and banged her head on the patio floor while saying “this is an accident” has been jailed.
Policeman’s son Darren Evans, aged 38, was said to have lost his temper because his partner did not like the curry he had ordered.
He later sent a text to the partner telling her not to say anything to police – at a time when officers were actually speaking to her.
At Mold Crown Court Evans, of Ffordd Penrhwylfa, Prestatyn, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and attempting to pervert the course of justice when other allegations were dropped by the prosecution.
He was jailed for a total of 30 weeks and a five year restraining order was made not to approach her.
Judge Rhys Rowlands said that they had been in a five year relationship, complainant Jennifer Jellico alleged he was possessive and controlling although the judge said there were no charges to reflect that.
A detailed victim impact statement set out all sorts of problems, he said, but Judge Rowlands explained Evans would be sentenced for what he had done on the day of the assault.
“I sentence you on the basis that you held her by the hair, took her outside, you banged her head on the patio causing unpleasant injuries,” said the judge.
You lost your temper,” added the judge. “She did not like the curry you had ordered.”
Nothing was done about it for a while.
But on the day she saw the police Evans sent her a text message telling her not to say anything about her head – that they would not be able to do anything about it.
“That suggests manipulative and controlling behaviour on your part,” the judge said.
While a letter from the defendant’s father, a police officer for 30 years, and from a former employee were taken into account, a pre-sentence report showed no contrition or remorse for what he had done and because the victim sustained a serious injury causing scarring to the forehead, only an immediate custodial sentence was justified.
Prosecuting barrister Anna Pope told how the four centimetre cut to the forehead had been glued but a scar remained.
Bernice Campbell, defending, said Evans accepted the relationship was at an end.
They did have a child together and contact arrangements could be made through the family court.
