Paedophile Sean Andrew Canavan has been jailed for 20 years after being convicted of sexually molesting a young child.
The 47-year-old had denied all charges against him but a Cardiff Crown Court jury found him guilty of five counts of assault by penetration on a child under 13 which happened over a four year period.
“Sean Canavan is a highly dangerous individual who poses a significant risk to the general public and to young people in particular,” Leanne Jonathan, district crown prosecutor for the CPS’s Wales Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, said.
“Canavan’s abhorrent abuse of his very young and vulnerable victim was systematic and carried out over a significant period of time.
“His conviction and sentence is a direct result of the immense bravery shown by his victim in coming forward to report what happened.
“I hope that his lengthy sentence will give comfort to the victim and their family, knowing that thanks to their actions he is no longer a threat to others.”
Other sex attack victims must come forward
Ms Jonathan urged other sex attack victims to come forward.
“I also hope that this victim’s bravery may give strength to others who may find themselves in a similar position,” she said.
“We want the message to go out that all of us involved in the criminal justice system will do our utmost to deliver justice for victims of terrible offences such as those committed by Canavan.”
The court heard the offences took place over a five-year period between 2005 and 2010.
Detective Constable Dan Todd, of Cardiff West CID, investigated the case.
20-year sentence reflects seriousness of offences
“The victim in this case showed remarkable maturity and bravery throughout our investigation, and particularly while giving evidence during the trial at Cardiff Crown Court,” he said.
“Canavan is a violent, controlling individual, and the 20-year prison sentence he was given reflects the seriousness of his offences.
“Investigating sexual violence is a priority for South Wales Police and we always ensure appropriate victim support from the beginning of any investigation to its conclusion.”
The force hoped the victim could “now put this horrific ordeal behind her and move on with her life.”
'Vile, disgusting, disturbed'
A source who knew Canavan had “nothing nice to say” about him.
“He’s a vile, disgusting, disturbed horrible man,” they said.
“He’s very manipulative and twists everything so things are always everyone else’s fault.”
Jail was too good for him, they said.
“I’ve never felt so much hate and I am just gutted I trusted him, only to find out later he was capable of doing something so disgusting," said the source.
Won't admit he's wrong
The ex-bouncer was “a controlling and evil man.”
“To finally see him put away for 20 years is fantastic news for us,” the source said.
Canavan was living a “dirty, disgusting secret life.”
“He won’t admit it to himself and does not believe he is in the wrong,” the source said.
“It’s like he has a mental disorder, like a sociopath.”
Subject of indefinite orders
They said “no-one knows how dangerous he is.”
Canavan, of Llandaff Road, Cardiff, was locked up last month after being found guilty of the attacks on December 22 last year.
He was also subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and an indefinite restraining order.
