Newport,South Wales - Man jailed for murder of father in 'deliberate, sustained and brutal attack upon a defenceless man'

Rhys Barnes was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court after pleading guilty to murder

Rhys Barnes was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years after admitting the murder of Rhys Jones

A man who killed a father of two after stabbing him 13 times said "I hope the ambulance takes ages and he dies", a court heard.
Rhys Barnes, 28, of Clarence Place in Newport had previously pleaded guilty to the murder of 36-year-old Rhys Jones following an incident on November 24 last year.
At Cardiff Crown Court today, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years.

Putting out rubbish

Barnes and Mr Jones lived on the same corridor at homeless hostel, Solas Hostel, in Newport, the court heard.
The court heard Mr Jones was stabbed after going outside to put two bags of rubbish out at around 8.35pm that evening.
Other residents heard a noise, described as "someone punching someone".
Barnes immediately said he stabbed Mr Jones and said he did it because he claimed Mr Jones had hit a woman earlier that day, who he described as his girlfriend.
Barnes made continuous threats to Mr Jones, the court heard.
Later that evening Mr Jones went to take the rubbish out.
Addressing Barnes, Judge Eleri Rees said: "On his return you appear as he is coming up the stairs. There is exchange.
"Within a minute you go down the stairs wearing a jacket that is heavily blood stained."
Following the incident, Barnes said: "He hit my girlfriend this morning so I stabbed him."
He added: "I hope he dies, no-one f***s with the Barnes."

Black-handled steak knife found

Mr Jones suffered 16 wounds, including 13 stab wounds and paramedics who attended the scene said Mr Jones' jeans were "saturated in blood".
The court heart there was blood on the walls and the floor and a black-handled steak knife was found by Mr Jones.
Barnes was described as "aggressive" and "angry" after the attack and said "I hope the ambulance takes ages and he dies."
"He shouldn't have hit my girlfriend."
Barnes added: "I struck the knife straight in him. Obviously he was dying. I tried to choke him.
"He was on the floor twitching and I stamped on his head.
"I knifed him and knifed him and knifed him. I don't know how many times."
He said Mr Jones grabbed the knife and cut him on the head.
Barnes became aggressive with a police officer at the scene, spat in his face and made threats towards the officer and his family.
When later asked by police about Mr Jones' death, Barnes said: "I'm not going to lose any sleep over it."

'Deliberate, sustained and brutal attack'

Prosecutor Michael Jones described the incident as a "deliberate, sustained and brutal attack upon a defenceless man and done so with intention.
Mr Michael Jones read a statement by Rhys Jones' father, Darryl Jones.
He said: "From the day I heard about the death of my son it wrecked my life totally.
"Every day I miss him. I can't stop thinking about him.
"I burried my son two days before Christmas. It was the worst Christmas I could ever imagine.
"Life is meaningless, just totally lost and empty.
"I tried to stay strong.
"My grandchildren have lost their father. Their mother lost her best friend.
"My son lived for his children."
Mr Jones, 36 and formerly of Pontllanfraith was pronounced dead at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.
Barnes had 17 previous convictions for 41 offences.
Sentencing him, Judge Eleri Rees said: "You showed no remorse or regret for the killing of Mr Jones."

'Tragic case'

Senior Investigating Officer, Superintendent Steve Corcoran said: “This is a tragic case involving the loss of Rhys Jones at such a young age in an unprovoked and needless attack.
"My thoughts are with Rhys’ family at this difficult time and I hope the outcome today will assist in some small way as they grieve for him. Although their efforts were in vain, I also wish to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Rhys’ hostel who provided CPR and support to him immediately following the assault.”
