A MAN was knocked unconscious when he was hit on the head with a metal pole.
The blow was delivered
by Craig Leslie Jones, who was regarded as a friend, after a Christmas party.
Jones, 27, of Green Lane, Shotton, who had never been in any trouble before, admitted assaulting Shaun Cooke in the incident on December 27.
He received a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for a year, when he appeared at Flintshire Magistrates Court in Mold and was ordered to carry out 200 hours unpaid work.
Jones, who represented himself, was also ordered to pay £500 compensation to his victim and £85 prosecution costs and an £80 surcharge.
Rhian Jackson, prosecuting, said the two men were friends and the complainant had been at a party at the defendant’s home.
The complainant left at midnight with his partner and later got involved in an argument with his partner and her friend.
Jones went to the house and the argument spread outside into the garden, and the defendant “punched Mr Cooke multiple times”.
He then picked up a metal pole and hit him in the face, knocking him unconscious.
The victim was left with severe bruising and swelling to his face and a bleeding nose.
In a victim impact statement Mr Cooke said there had been no lasting physical injury but psychologically he had been “all over the place” and was scared to leave his home.
He had also been struggling to sleep because of the worry.
Jones said he regretted everything that had happened.
District Judge Gwyn Jones said the use of a weapon in such circumstances could haveled
to immediate custody.
But he took into account that the defendanthad no previous convictions. He had shown remorse, was in full-time employment, and it appeared to have been an isolated incident.
