A petrol station employee has described how she was dragged along the forecourt when a customer made-off off without paying for his fuel.
CCTV footage shows the brave 41-year-old trying to grab the thief’s car keys from inside the vehicle as he makes his getaway on February 6.
The incident at the Esso filling station on Cathedral Road in Cardiff is one of many linked to the same car, which have occurred in recent weeks.

'He did not back down'

The petrol station employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “It was just a normal day at work because we get this happening all the time but this was different because I decided to confront him and he didn’t back down.
“I’ve actually tried to block it out of my head because it was quite horrific.”
She said she became suspicious when the thief showed no sign of paying for his fuel after filling empty cans in the boot of his car plus the vehicle itself.
“I had a gut feeling about him, and wasn’t going to let someone rob us on my watch,” she said.

“So I went outside and stood by his car as he filled up.
“But after filling up he went and sat in the drivers’ seat and told me he was getting his wallet.

'Killed for £80'

“I didn’t believe him so I stood between him and the door so he couldn’t close it.”
The situation escalated when she tried to take the driver’s keys.
“I was shouting for him to stop but I knew he wasn’t going to so I let go, and it’s a good thing I did because he wasn’t thinking of my safety.
“If I hadn’t let go, I would’ve been dragged onto Cathedral Road with the car and I could’ve been killed for £80.”
Police believe they have now recovered the vehicle involved in the theft, but are still searching for the driver.
South Wales Police said a dark green Mazda had been recovered by officers in West Close, Butetown, where it was left by the driver on February 19.

Vehicle seized

The vehicle has since been forensically examined by officers.
South Wales Police said that on February 16, the same vehicle was involved in a collision with a car and a bus on Ninian Park Road, Riverside.
No-one was injured.
It is believed that the car was also involved in three other ‘make-offs’ last month from Morrisons supermarket petrol stations in Barry, Llanishen and Penylan.
A spokeswoman said: “There have been no arrests at this stage and enquiries are continuing to trace the driver of the car and registered owner.”

'Strong woman'

Esso store manager Rageu Shan has meanwhile praised his employee.
“Not many people would’ve done what she did,” he said.
“She was a little shaken but she’s obviously a strong woman.”
