Four men are on trial at Cardiff Crown Court accused of the "brutal and merciless killing" of 35-year-old Russell Peachey.
James Williams, 31, of no fixed address, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Dean Beasley, 37, of Treharne Road, Barry, Shaminder Singh, 40, of Cornwall Street, Cardiff, and Christopher James Smith, 34, of Caerau Court, Cardiff, deny murder.
Mr Peachey was found unconscious in North Street, Grangetown, at about 4.15am on Saturday, August 1, 2015 and later died as a result of his injuries.
During the opening by prosecutor Vincent Coughlin QC on Thursday, the court heard his cause of death was blunt force head injury.
Mr Coughlin said: "In the view of the pathologist these fractures suggest that Russell Peachey had been struck more than once with at least one blunt object or weapon with a circular surface, such as the head of a hammer."
He told the jury: "The evidence you will hear will suggest that he was felled by a weapon such as a hammer and was then subjected to further blows to his head as he lay in the road defenceless.
"It was a brutal and merciless killing."
The trial is expected to last for six weeks.
