TWO men from the same family have pleaded guilty to sending racist and offensive messages to a former colleague.
JAson Mertakkas, 38, of Eagles Court, Wrexham, and his nephew Theo Mertakkas, 20, of Castle Street, Caergwrle, pleaded guilty to sending offensive Facebook messages to Mohammed Hamarahim.
All worked together at the Gwersyllt Fish Bar, a family-run business for 30 years, currently managed by Jason Mertakkas.
Wrexham Magistrates Court heard that he sent offensive Facebook messages to Mr Hamarahim on April 26 after his then employee took a holiday and felt he had been left short-staffed.
Mr Hamarahim no longer works at the fish bar.
Prosecuting, Rhian Jackson said: “The victim, from north Iraq, moved to the UK in 2003 and worked at the fish bar for Mr Mertakkas.
“He had phoned Mr Mertakkas to say he would be off work because his brother was ill and received Facebook messages which by their nature were very offensive, insulting and hateful towards his ethnicity.
“Mr Hamarahim found them distressing and a screen shot showed one which said “dirty Iraqi P**i, if you ever come back to Gwersyllt we will shoot you”.
“Jason Mertakkas’ nephew Theo also sent messages via private inbox on Facebook.
“It hurts him that two people he worked with have treated him this way.”
Defending Jason Mertakkas, Laura Preston-Hayes said that he had been the victim of racist abuse himself.
