A MAN attacked the car of his former partner’s new boyfriend with a circular saw before driving into it, a court heard.
Prosecuting at Wrexham Magistrates Court, Justin Espie said Shaun Hayden Poole, 34, drove to Alison Maddocks’ home on Sycamore Drive in the town on May 27 and damaged a front door with ‘an object’.
Miss Maddocks was frightened and called the police but Poole, of Oak Drive in Wrexham, turned his attention to Dean Lloyd Jones’ Ford Fiesta.
After damaging the passenger side door, Poole climbed onto the roof and ‘attacked’ it with a circular saw before targeting the bonnet, Mr Espie added.
Poole then got into his van, driving into the car and shunting it forward before he drove off.
The offences happened while Poole was on bail for another incident at Miss Maddocks’ home the previous day.
Poole arrived uninvited at his former partner’s house at 2pm on May 26 and asked her whether she had been seeing someone else and she told him to leave.
She later received a text message from Poole at 8pm saying he would ‘hammer’ her and her new partner if they were in the house together with his daughter.
Shortly afterwards, Poole arrived outside the house and grabbed Miss Maddocks by the wrists before pushing her back into the house.
Poole ripped off the garden gate from its hinges and drove off in his van.
Mr Espie told the court that while the damage to the car had not been quantified, it was ‘clearly the case that the car was a write-off’.
Poole had pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to assault by beating and sending by public communication network an offensive/indecent/obscene/menacing message.
He also pleaded guilty to using threatening/abusive/insulting words or behaviour and three counts of criminal damage.
Melissa Griffiths, defending, said that Poole and Miss Maddocks had split up about three months before the incidents happened.
Poole had been given reason to believe she might be thinking about a reconciliation, Miss Griffiths said, and they were going to go for a meal to discuss where the relationship was going.
But Miss Griffiths added that Poole, a self-employed industrial floor layer, had been told by a third party that Miss Maddocks was seeing someone else and had gone to her home on May 26 to ‘talk about what was happening’.
Miss Maddocks ‘did not take too kindly’ to Poole being there, Miss Griffiths said.
Poole had taken her by the wrists and had ‘pushed her into her home, no more that’, she added, before damaging the garden.
The next evening Poole foolishly decided to drive past Miss Maddocks’ home, saw Mr Jones’ car parked there and ‘saw red’, Miss Griffiths said.
She added Poole fully accepted that he had overreacted, was not proud of his actions in any way and realised he should have ‘stepped back from the situation and considered it in a more rational way’.
Miss Griffiths added that Poole was probably ‘the most straightforward I have ever dealt with’ and had been honest with the court in saying his hours of work meant he could not complete unpaid work. He would rather serve his time and come out, the court heard.
District judge Gwyn Jones gave Poole maximum credit for his early guilty plea.
Jailing Poole for a total of 22 weeks, he told Poole custody was ‘more than justified’ in his case, but that he could have been persuaded not to impose a prison sentence.
However Poole had indicated he did not want a community sentence, and jailed him for 18 weeks for the assault and four weeks for damaging the car, to run consecutively. There was no separate penalty for the other offences.
No costs were ordered but Poole must pay £200 for damaging the car and the same amount for the door.
