A man who stole 32 chocolate bars from a pound shop and threatened to attack a security guard with a bicycle chain has been jailed.
Morris Doyle, 47, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday after pleading guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and shoplifting.
The court heard that Doyle visited the Poundland shop in Queen Street, Cardiff , on May 4, when a security guard saw him put 32 chocolate bars into a Tesco carrier bag.
Restrained and arrested
Doyle walked out of the shop and was followed by the security guard who tried to detain the defendant, but was told by Doyle: “F****** get away or I’ll f****** hit you”.
With that he pulled out a bicycle chain and threatened the security guard with it.
Doyle was subsequently restrained by two other security guards and was arrested.
In police interview he accepted taking the chocolate bars, worth £32, as he only had £2 in his pocket.
'Blatant offence'
The court also heard that Doyle, who had previously been imprisoned for shoplifted and had tried to set fire to the Clink restaurant at Cardiff Prison, was battling a “long-standing” heroin addiction which had led him to commit the offences.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Neil Bidder QC said: “Heroin addiction has ruined your life.
“You committed a blatant shoplifting offence and more seriously threatened a security guard with a chain.
“You didn’t swing it and you didn’t injure him but there is no other alternative other than an immediate custodial sentence.”
Doyle, of Ogmore Road, Caerau, Cardiff, was sentenced to serve 32 weeks and six days imprisonment.
