POLICE have confirmed that a dog which a court ordered be put down after its owner was found to be not a fit and proper person to keep it has been destroyed.
In April Swansea Magistrates Court ordered that Ben Robert Evans' three-year-old pit bull — Diesel — be put down following an application from South Wales Police.
Evans, formerly of Llys Gwyn, Llangyfelach, had been in prison at the time of the hearing after attacking two men in the W50 bar in Morriston.
The court was shown CCTV from the bar which showed Evans taking Diesel and another dog — a Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Mush — into the bar where he became involved in two fights, punching one man to the ground and then grappling with a second.
The footage showed Evans attacking the men while the dogs were in the bar, but the animals were not involved in the incidents — at one stage one of the dogs was seen standing on the bar's pool table before a customer picks it up.
South Wales Police applied to the court for an immediate destruction order in relation to Diesel, saying the 28-year-old was "not a fit and proper person to be in charge of such a dog".
The court heard Evans has a long history of offending, including offences of violence.
Laura Sherwood, for Evans, had asked the court not to grant an immediate order saying Mr Evans "loves these dogs more than anyone else".
But District Judge Neil Thomas, sitting at the magistrates court, said he had before him 16-pages of Evans' previous convictions, and that "he effectively took the dogs to a fight" — the judge granted the police application for immediate destruction, subject to an appeal.
Now police have confirmed that the order has been carried out.
A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "Magistrates in Swansea issued a dog destruction order, which was subject to a 28-day appeal.
"We can confirm that no appeal was received, and the order has been carried out in accordance with the wishes of the court."
