A man was thrown from the balcony of his girlfriend’s flat by her angry ex-partner who had just got out of jail for attacking him before.
Victim Christopher Williams, suffered a suspected broken hip in the frightening fall atPorthcawl on May 5.
He and the woman involved, Katie Edwards, both ended up in hospital after she too was punched, as he fell.
Their attacker, Jack Watson, 22, had climbed up a drain pipe to reach the balcony of Ms Edwards’ flat and had confronted both of them, Cardiff Crown Court heard.
At the time, he was on prison licence, after being given six months in February for forcing his way in and arming himself with a knife, before hitting Mr Williams over the head with a frying pan.
In 2015 he was also before a court for a separate assault on Ms Edwards, said prosecutor David Pugh.
He told the court: “She said their relationship was a violent one and she was aware of the earlier attack on Mr Williams.
“So when she heard a loud banging on the door on May 5 and his voice telling her to open it, she shouted that she was in the bath to try to put Jack Watson off.
“She was calling the police when the next thing she knew, he was getting onto her balcony and making for an open door.”
Watson ripped the phone from her hand, shouting at her and Mr Williams, hearing the noise, came into the room and tried to stop him getting into further into the flat.

'Rugby tackled, picked up and toppled over'
Mr Pugh said: “Mr Williams managed to get him onto the floor but he was struggling and punching and saying, ‘I’m going to f****** kill you’.
“They both got to their feet, still in the balcony area and Mr Williams was suddenly rugby tackled, picked up and toppled over.”
And there was more to come, he said.
As the injured man lay beneath the flat, Watson turned his attention for his former girlfriend, aiming “a number of blows at her head”.
“The attack on her was still continuing when the police arrived,” Mr Pugh added.
Officers later described finding her extremely distressed and with a large swelling on her forehead.
'Next time I will kill you'
As he was being led away, Watson, of Maes Gwair, Cefn Glas, Bridgend saw his other injured victim on the grass outside and told him : “Forget a restraining order. You are a puppy and the next time I will kill you.”
He told police he had been the one attacked but in court pleaded guilty to two counts of actual bodily harm.
His lawyer Robert Chudleigh said it was accepted the incident must have been “terrifying from start to finish” but claimed Watson had not gone there looking for trouble.
He had been suffering depression and anxiety and had been drinking that day.

He has been in court before for 22 previous offences, including violence, dishonesty and being concerned in the supply of drugs.
Recorder of Cardiff Judge Eleri Rees jailed him for two years saying: “You had no business to enter that flat.
“Both of them had previously suffered at your hands and I have no doubt you intended to cause more serious injury than you did, by tipping Mr Williams over the balcony.”
The court heard he suffered an injury to his shoulder and doctors thought one of his hips was fractured.
But that was found not to be the case when he was X-rayed again after the swelling had gone down.
