SEARCHES forming part of a historic murder probe are expanding.
Divers from the North West Police Underwater Search & Marine unit were yesterday combing the Chirk Bank stretch of Llangollen Canal for clues in connection with an alleged historic murder believed to have taken place in Wrexham.
The latest search follows previous efforts at the nearby Moreton stretch of the canal.
The specialist team, a collaboration between police in Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire and North Wales, continued to hunt for clues as part of the probe launched last month after detectives received a tip-off that an unidentified man had been murdered and buried in the Wrexham area.
Dozens of officers dug up woodland on the outskirts of Bwlchgwyn in the search for a body linked to the alleged historic murder.
Officers from North Wales Police focused their attention on woodland at Nant-y-Ffrith, where they carried out a detailed search and examination of the land.
The heightened activity in Bwlchgwyn followed a thorough search of two properties.
Officers were granted warrants to go through properties in Wrexham and over the Shropshire border near Oswestry.
North Wales Police would like to hear from anyone who may have information to help them with the alleged murder investigation. Call them on 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
