An entire town centre could be hit with an order against bad behaviour amid fears about anti-social problems.
Concern over the levels of bad behaviour in Wrexham has prompted council chiefs to act.
They now want to place the entire town centre under a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), which would see anyone drinking, loitering, using intoxicating substances, peeing in the bus station or defecating hit with a £100 fine.
In essence, any action likely to have a negative impact on locals’ quality of life could be liable for action.
A consultation is currently underway on the order, which takes in the areas extending between Capel y Groes on Powell Road, Eagles Meadow, King Street and Bellevue Park.
Council staff and police officers have the power to issue the fines, which can be as high as £1,000 if those hit with the penalty fail to pay.
Cllr Hugh Jones, Wrexham council’s lead member for communities and partnerships, said: “We have been aware for some time that the levels of anti-social behaviour occurring in the town centre is unacceptable and is of concern to visitors, businesses and residents alike.
“In order to address this problem, we are proposing to use powers given to us under legislation to introduce a PSPO, similar to the one that has been successfully introduced in Rhosddu Park and Cemetery.
“The order will give authorised officers the right to issue a £100 fine which will deter offences taking place in these areas.
“I will be taking a report to the council’s executive board in June for the proposed order, and I encourage as many people as possible to take part in the consultation so we have a wide range of views on the proposals.”
In April, the local authority launched its first ever PSPO for Rhosddu Park and Rhossdu Cemetery in Rhosddu Road.
A sign was erected at the site which included a picture warning people not to defecate there, which was thought to be a UK first.
Other notices asked visitors not to drink alcohol, take drugs, sleep rough at night, litter, urinate in public, smoke in the children’s play area, let dogs foul or leave dogs out of control.
Residents had complained about all of these issues taking place, prompting council chiefs to take action.
