A man was arrested after allegedly stealing a boat from Rhyl harbour before trying to swim back to shore - prompting the coastguard to have to launch a mission to rescue him.
A 22-year-old is being questioned on suspicion of taking the vessel from the town’s harbour at some point overnight and taking it out to sea.
Rhyl Coastguard were contacted when a flare was set off in the sea off Rhyl and the lifeboat was launched at 5.45am.
Rhyl RNLI were able to rescue a man who was suffering from hypothermia.
He was brought to shore and transferred to an ambulance.
Holyhead Coastguard said the man had apparently panicked and set off a flare before trying to swim to shore wearing a life ring.
A spokesman for the Coastguard said: “If things had gone differently, we would have been looking for a body.
“When the lifeboat got there, we believe he was minutes from not surviving.
“He said he had been in the water for a couple of hours.”
The rescuers from Rhyl Lifeboat were able to bring the boat back to shore while the man was taken to hospital.
However, it is understood that while on his way to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd the man declined treatment and asked paramedics to let him out, which they did.
But North Wales Police officers soon swooped, and made an arrest in the Bodelwyddan area at 7.30am.
They confirmed a man had been arrested on suspicion of stealing a boat and is currently in custody.
A spokesman for North Wales Police said a man from the Rhyl area was due to be interviewed today after he “dried out”.
