A PAEDOPHILE who molested a girl of nine after inviting her family for trips on his speedboat was jailed for seven years on Monday.
Barry Hopcutt, 59, of Beechwood Mews, Macclesfield, Cheshire, had been convicted by a Caernarfon crown court jury of sexually assaulting her in 2008 and a child sex offence last summer involving a girl of seven.
Judge Geraint Walters told him: ”You are a predatory individual who will befriend, and has befriended, a number of adults who have young girls within their families and when you gain their trust you abuse it.”
Hopcutt had met his victims’ families at an Anglesey caravan site.
Judge Walters said the defendant had a boat and was “something of a character” at the site where he had a caravan.
But he had persuaded an innocent seven-year-old to pull down her underwear.
After the youngster told her mum and police were contacted, they discovered a previous complaint seven years earlier about Hopcutt. The defendant was accused of placing his hand in the older girl’s swimming costume or shorts, with her parents feet away from him on his boat.
“There’s a considerable degree of breaching the trust of the parents,” the judge added.
Hopcutt must register as a sex offender for life and a sexual harm prevention order, limiting his contact with children, was made for an indefinite period.
Investigating officer detective constable Shona Campbell at Caernarfon CID said afterwards: “Hopcutt is a sexual predator who exploited two families who befriended him while holidaying in North Wales so he could target and abuse their children.
"The young victims and their families have been particularly brave and showed significant strength of character in coming forward to report what happened.”
