A MAN who stole a block of cheese from a shop sold it minutes later to a pensioner who took pity on him - before burgling her house when she turned her back.
Swansea Crown Court heard that Corey David Michael took the cheese from the Tesco shop in Briton Ferry and then walked to the nearby Ruskin Street where he approached a woman on the driveway of her house and asked her if she wanted to buy it.
The woman - in her 70s - said she would give him £2 for the cheese and the pair went into her kitchen while she got the money. The pair then left the house - only for Michael to return moments later while his victim was distracted in the back garden and steal her purse from the kitchen.
Brian Simpson, for the prosecution, said the purse had tremendous sentimental value to the victim as it had been a gift her grandson, who has since died.
Michael, of Mayberry Road, Baglan, pleaded guilty to theft and to burglary when he appeared in the dock today.
The court heard the 23-year-old has 21 convictions for 36 offences including four for previous house burglaries - one of which was at it his mother's house in 2014 and for which he was sentenced to 876 days in prison.
David Singh, for Michael, said his client had been "battling drug dependency issues" for a number of years.
Judge Keith Thomas told Michael he had "taken advantage" of the Briton Ferry pensioner who was only "attempting to show you every kindness and assistance".
The judge said Michael had an "appalling record" of offences, particularly against people who were trying to help him.
He sentenced Michael to 30 months in prison for the burglary and one month for the theft, both to run concurrently.
