Anglesey Council has agreed on a preferred location for the permanent site BUT some locals are far from happy...
Plans to set up a permanent site for travellers near an Anglesey recycling centre have sparked a furious reaction from residents.
Last week, Anglesey Council announced proposals to move the “new age traveller” families currently residing on a lay-by near the A5025 at Pentraeth to a specially built facility adjacent to the Penhesgyn Recycling Centre at Penmynydd.
But according to some nearby residents, the site’s close proximity to the recycling centre could could pose some “potentially serious” health risks.
In an open letter to the council penned by the residents read: “Penhesgyn is the furthest away of all the identified sites from schools, shops and other amenities.
“Would the council give planning permission for a mainstream housing development on the proposed site, and would any of us choose to live there?
“The council will not only have to buy land from an adjacent farm to create access to the site, but will also have to provide more secure fencing around the refuse centre to deter vandalism, arson and theft and to prevent children straying onto the site.
“Will these costs be covered by a grant from the Welsh Government or will they be borne by Anglesey taxpayers?
“We believe that both the process and the discussion of the council are seriously flawed.”
Local county councillor Alun Mummery added: “Having visited the site, it’s plain to see why local residents have their objections.
“There are obvious issues with access to the site and I also forsee problems with the planning process.”
Dr Gwynne Jones, Anglesey council’s chief executive, said: “Over recent months, we’ve beenworking to identify possible sites on the island.
“Dealing with gypsy and traveller sites is always going to be a controversial and sensitive issue, but it is one which the county council must address.”
Five other sites along the A5/A55 corridor have been short-listed for temporary stopping sites. These are:
- A strip of land between A55/A5 between Llanfairpwll and Star Crossroads
- Parcel of land at Gaerwen smallholding
- Land adjacent to the A5 near Cymunod Farm, Bryngwran
- Land at former farm, off Cyttir Road Holyhead (South of Kingsland School)
- Land at Tyddyn Lantern Farm, Holyhead
