Leon Port, 24, of Mount Pleasant Cottages in Mountain Ash, was found guilty of the murder of Mark Hopes following a trial

A man has been found guilty of murdering his stepfather after he was found battered to death at his home.
Leon Port, 24, of Mount Pleasant Cottages in Mountain Ash , was found guilty by a jury atMerthyr Crown Court by a majority of 11 to one.
During the trial the court heard Port had spent the day with his stepfather, 45-year-old Mark Hopes, and was drinking on the sofa with him at Mr Hopes’ home on Brithweunydd Road, Trealaw, on October 2 last year.
Later in the afternoon an argument broke out between the two and Port said Mr Hopes asked him to shake his hand and “squeezed it as hard as he could” while standing over him.
He told the court Mr Hopes pinned him to the wall and started to punch the wall next to his head and stamped on his foot.

"I was terrified and didn't know what to do"

Port said: “I thought he was going to kill me. I was terrified and didn’t know what to do.”
The jury heard Port hit Mr Hopes in the face two or three times and was holding a Sky television remote in his other hand.
He then dragged his stepfather outside the back of the house and left him with his back to the kitchen wall.
Port sat in the house until his mother, Maria Hopes, returned home from work.
Maria Hopes, 46, from Brithweunydd Road, Trealaw, was a co-defendant in the trial and was also accused of murdering her husband, which she denied.
The jury did not reach a verdict on Hopes and the jury was discharged.
