Elias Hussain Mahmud was sentenced to 12 years for rape at Swansea Crown Court
A RAPIST who subject a woman to an horrific and life-changing attack on a Swansea street has been jailed for 12 years.
Elias Hussain Mahmud set upon his victim as she walked through Hafod into Swansea city centre, knocking her to the ground and shouting threats while raping her twice.
Swansea Crown Court heard the 22-year-old was caught by police less than an hour later.
Mahmud, of Stanley Terrace, Mount Pleasant, Swansea, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by penetration, two counts of rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and making a threat to kill when he appeared in the dock.
The court heard the attack had had a profound impact on the victim, leaving her frightened to leave the house.
Mahmud had come to Britain in 2015 as an illegal immigrant, and was subsequently granted leave to remain in the country until 2020.

The court heard that on the morning of April 14 Mahmud approached his victim from behind as she walked along Neath Road, and launched his attack.
After a struggle he knocked the woman to the floor and raped her before running off.
He was arrested around 45-minutes after the attack when police responded to calls from residents living in Pottery Street — off New Cut Road — about a man acting suspiciously in the area. Officers were on the scene within minutes and arrested the Ethiopian asylum-seeker.
Mahmud was sentenced to 12 years in prison for each of the assault by penetration charges and the rape charges — all to run concurrently — and two years for the actual bodily harm, to run concurrently with the sexual assault charges.The making threats to kill charge will lay on the file.
South Wales Police detective chief inspector Esyr Jones said he wanted to assure people that "stranger attacks" were rare in Swansea - and that they were always thoroughly investigated.
He said: "This was a very serious incident which understandably caused a lot of public concern.
"A lone female was walking to work when she was assaulted and raped in terrifying circumstances. This incident has had a life-changing impact on the victim and our thoughts first and foremost are with her.
"Stranger attacks, such as this one, are rare in Swansea but when they do occur we have specialist officers to thoroughly investigate these crimes and with independent partner agencies are able to provide support and care to victims."
