A MAN who broke into a Gower primary school was caught after police matched his DNA from blood recovered at the scene.
Swansea Magistrates Court heard the burglar alarm was activated at Bishopston Primary School at around 5am on July 2, and when police and the head teacher arrived they found a staffroom window was damaged.
Inside the building they found the door to the school office had been kicked-in and untidy search made of the room — though nothing had been taken.
Police also found blood stains in the room from which they recovered a DNA profile — and that led them to 41-year-old Lee David Merchant.
The court head that in his subsequent police interview he said he had been taking drugs at the time of the offence and had no recollection of the break-in — but accepted he must have done it if his blood had been found at the scene.
Merchant, of Bishopston Road, Bishopston, pleaded guilty to burglary when he appeared before justices.
The cost of making-good the damage to the school was put at £520.
The court heard Merchant has previous convictions for some 21 offences.
Sentencing was adjourned to Swansea's specialist drugs court on Friday, and Merchant was released on unconditional bail.
