How areas are ranked

The areas cover so-called Layer Super Output Areas (LSOA), which are small and focused areas of usually around 1,500 people. So you get a result that's relevant to the area where you live.
It compares the number of crimes to the area's population.
However, these areas also include city centres, which often have many more crimes committed in proportion to the people that live there.
So these areas will rank highly for crimes committed there.
For example, Cardiff city centre is in the top 10 areas in the whole of England and Wales for 'person crimes' like violence and robbery.
The centres of Manchester and Brighton are also in the Top 10.
The analysis looks at person crime, property crime, as well as their underlying categories. For each type a ranking is provided to compare how more or less likely a crime is to happen in a certain area.

What are person and property crimes?

Person crimes are violent crimes that target individuals - it is generally associated with less fortunate areas.
For property crime, the goal is to obtain money, property or some other benefits - it is generally associated with wealthier areas.
While it is true that violent crime will generally be more common in areas with a lower average income, the figures show property crime will happen in different areas, regardless of the economic background.

Which crimes are committed in which areas?

Brighton has the most violent crimes in England and Wales.
West London is where you are most likely to get robbed or theft.
Places in Westminster around Leicester Square, Oxford Circus and Soho placed in the top five across England and Wales for both robberies and theft directly from the person, like pick pocketing and purse snatching.
