A great-grandfather who dressed up as Superman to complete in adrenalin fuelled charity challenges has been left distraught after his costume was stolen.
Wally Harmer, 93, has raised thousands of pounds and completed zip-line challenges while dressed as his favourite superhero
Wally Harmer, 93, from Cardiff, has raised thousands of pounds for good causes with his kind deeds.
And over the years the adventurous pensioner has dressed up as his favourite superhero, the Easter bunny and Father Christmas while raising money.
The Cardiff City fan has taken part in a number of challenges to raise money, including a mile-long zip-line challenge at Zip World in Penrhyn Quarry, Snowdonia, in 2014, reaching speeds of up to 95mph.
'Integral part'
Since then he has gone on to do two more zip-line challenges at St David’s Hotel, in Cardiff Bay in 2015 and again in May this year, all while dressed up as Clark Kent’s alter-ego.
Now the father-of-three has contacted police after his Superman costume went missing - and he believes it may have been stolen.
Mr Harmer, from Grangetown , said: “I was carrying bags of shopping in from the car and my boot was left open, so it must have been taken then.
“I didn’t take any notice of it straight away, I thought I had put it somewhere else and I didn’t get round to looking for it for three or four weeks.
“When I couldn’t find it I contacted the police because someone might have handed it in.”
The grandfather of ten and the great-grandfather of three raised more than £1,000 for Cancer Research with the zip-line challenge in North Wales.
He has also raised money for other charities including Tenovus Cancer Care, Velindre and the Princes Gate Trust.
Mr Harmer said the Superman suit was an “integral” part of his fundraising because it was the main thing people remembered about his fundraising activities.
The former President of the South Wales and Monmouth National Union of Railwaymen added: “It’s an integral part of what I do. I can raise money in some ways but it’s not the same.
'It would mean everything to me'
“I can’t go out doing promotional work for charities because I haven’t got the suit.
“It would mean everything to me to get the suit back. I don’t want it back for myself but because it is recognised as a charity fundraiser and that’s the top and bottom of it.”
A spokeswoman from South Wales Police said: “South Wales Police has received a report of a recent theft from a car parked in Redlaver Street, Grangetown.
“It is believed a black holdall, containing a Superman suit and cape, was stolen from the boot of the grey Toyota while the owner was taking shopping into his house.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence number *314865.”
