A SWANSEA man who assaulted his elderly mother by slapping her in the face has been fined and given a community order.
Swansea Magistrates' Court heard that a witness reported shouting and the sounds of an argument coming form 59-year-old David Jones's house in Townhill at lunchtime on June 9 — and then saw his mother crying at the door of the property.
The court was told Jones was heard to tell his mother he was going to "hit you big time" before taking her back inside the house, and closing the door.
The witness then described hearing "a loud smack" and, concerned about what was happening, he called a Swansea Council housing warden who advised him to telephone the police.
When officers arrived at the house they found Jones's mum sitting in a wheelchair "wailing and distraught" and crying, and with a small cut above her right eye.
Jones, of Merlin Crescent, Townhill, Swansea, had previously been found guilty of assault following a trial when he appeared before district judge Neil Thomas for sentencing.
Jones has no previous convictions.
The court heard the victim of the attack did not support the prosecution.
The district judge told Jones: "Your mother is the one person who should be able to trust you. She brought you up, she looked after you — and you assaulted her."
Jones was given a 12-month community order with a rehabilitation requirement, and was fined £150.He will also have to pay £300 in prosecution costs, and a £115 victim surcharge.
The district judge said that, given the circumstances of the offence, he would not make a compensation order.
