AN 83-year-old man who sexually assaulted a young girl left her feeling her life was "worthless", a court has heard.
Terrence Mitchell, touched the upper thighs and stomach of the child under her clothes, while he pleasured himself.
Swansea Crown Court heard the incident - which happened five years ago - had had a devastating psychological impact on his victim.
It was only a number of years after the attack that the girl felt able to tell her mother what had happened.
Mithchell, of Francis Court, Rhos, had previously pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13 when he appeared in the dock for sentencing.
The court heard details of an impact statement from the victim in which she said the incident had led to episodes of self-harm and to suicide attempts, and to her feeling that her life was "worthless". She added that the attack had left her feeling nervous around men, and that Mitchell had "ruined her life".
Recorder Greg Bull QC said he was mindful of the defendant's age and extreme ill-health but that he had had committed "a disgraceful act directed at a child that has had a considerable effect on her".
The judge sentenced Mitchell to two years in prison suspended for two years, and made him the subject of a 7pm to 7am curfew for six months. In addition, Mitchell will be on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
