Pontypridd,South Wales - Five people rescued from a block of flats after it was deliberately set on fire

Poets Close in Rhydyfelin

Fifteen firefighters were sent to Poets Close in Rhydyfelin on Tuesday evening

Firefighters rescued five people from the third floor of a block of flats after it was deliberately set on fire.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to the flats on Poets Close in Rhydyfelin,Pontypridd at 10.21pm on Tuesday.
The fire had been set at the bottom of a staircase and one of the crews rescued two of the people trapped inside using ladders to a third-floor window.
A second crew extinguished the fire and led the remaining residents to safety with 15 firefighters working on the blaze in total.

A 'stay put' evacuation

Steve Rossiter, from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service , said when the emergency call came in, control operators provided fire survival guidance and advised the residents of the best place to go within the building to be rescued.
He said: “The ‘stay put’ evacuation strategy worked well as the residents who tried to escape were unable to do so because their only means of escape was via the single staircase which was smoked logged.
“The fire doors within the staircase and the flat entrance fire doors provided critical time for the crews to extinguish the fire, prior to leading the residents to safety.”
The fire service confirmed the incident was arson and said it is working with South Wales Police on the investigation.
