The 61 year-old, now of Holywell, had a “ horrendous” track record but had apparently been making progress working with the probation service recently

One of Britain’s most prolific shoplifters admitted his 371st offence when he appeared in court yesterday.
Magistrates in Llandudno heard that David Archer , 61, stole two bottles of spirits from the town’s Asda store on July 14, and that put him in breach of a six-month conditional discharge imposed a week earlier.
Prosecutor James Neary said that Archer, who had been on licence, was returned to prison and was released earlier this week.
Alex Fitzgerald, defending, said it had to be admitted that Archer had a “ horrendous” record but had made progress in recent weeks, working with the probation service.
“His rate of offending has slowed dramatically and though it would be foolish and ridiculous of me to tell you you will never see him again he really has made progress,” he said.
Archer, he said, had enormous health problems and was now seen as a figure of fun by some young people.
Archer, of Mostyn Lodge Hotel, Mostyn, Holywell, pleaded guilty to theft of the bottles worth a total of £57, and also admitted the breach of the conditional discharge.
He was fined £40 on each charge and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £30 surcharge.
The court heard that he owed £2,000 in outstanding fines.
