Ellis Rhys Jones, 22, of Dinas, hit speeds of 96mph while on the drug

A factory worker high on cannabis who drove at almost 100mph at night to escape police has been spared jail.
Ellis Rhys Jones, 22, of Dinas, near Caernarfon , hit speeds of 96mph but escaped jail after a judge said he trusted that he would “never be so foolish as to fall foul of the law again.”
Prosector Simon Mills told Caernarfon Crown Court that Jones, of previous good character, had previously pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of a controlled drug.
The court heard that at 11.20pm on May 24 this year, police officers were at a roundabout at Bontnewydd when they saw an approaching Seat car going too fast.
Mr Mills said that one of the officers wearing a high-visibility jacket stepped into the road and lifted his hand to stop the car but the driver changed gear and drove around the officer.

"He wasn’t intending to stop"

Police gave chase driving at 50mph in a 30mph area and with their blue light on.
Mr Mills said: “It was clear that he wasn’t intending to stop.”
He said Jones overtook two cars, once crossing double white lines, and reached a speed of over 90mph by Ffrwd Cae Du before driving to Saron with the police in pursuit.
It is believed that during that time he had then switched his headlamps off.
Mr Mills said: “He drove at 96mph in poor visiblity.”
Police lost sight of him but a second police car bravely blocked the road near Saron when Jones came to a stop.
The car smelt of cannabis and there was a small amount consistent with personal use found, the court heard.
Tests later showed Jones was four times the limit for driving after consuming cannabis and admitted the offence.

Stupid

Elen Owen defending said Mr Jones, who worked for DMM making climbing equipment at Llanberis, admitted he’d been stupid but that the actual ride was well under two miles.
Sentencing Jones to six months jail suspended for two years, His Honour Judge Geraint Walters said he had intended sending him to prison and it was lucky he had not injured himself or others.
He said: “It could so easily have gone so badly wrong.”
Jones was given a 12-month driving ban and must carry out an extended re-test.
He was also handed a 12-month drug rehabilitation order and ordered to stick to a three-month curfew between 11pm-6am daily and pay costs and surcharge of £415.
