A LLANELLI man who attacked a stranger in the street in a "drunken, gratuitous" assault has avoided jail - but been warned that if he does something similar in the future he can expect prison
Robert John Morgan Rees was on a night out when he launched the unprovoked attack on his victim, punching him the face before walking away.
Swansea Magistrates Court heard the 20-year-old had "indulged in spirits" while out in Swansea city centre for the night, and was very drunk.
Rees, of Heol Ffynnon, Penyfan, Llanelli, pleaded guilty to assault by beating when he appeared before the district judge sitting at the magistrates court.
The court heard the victim had been for a night out in Swansea and was walking along High Street heading for the train station when he encountered Rees, who was shirtless and acting "aggressively".
Rees then "lunged" towards his victim and punched him in the face in an unprovoked attack.
He was subsequently arrested, and in his police interview told officers he had been on a night out on Wind Street with friends and had drunk "a large amount of alcohol" before becoming separated from his party.
District judge Neil Thomas described Rees' actions on July 3 as "drunken, gratuitous violence on a stranger".
He said anyone who went to town, got drunk and attacked somebody ought to understand they faced a period of custody — the only question in this case was whether Rees would go straight to custody, or whether the term of imprisonment would be suspended.
Rees was sentenced to 16 weeks suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work and complete a rehabilitation course.
The defendant will also have to pay his victim £200 compensation for the injuries he inflicted.
The district judge warned Rees that there was "little or no doubt" in his mind that if the defendant appeared before any court for a similar offence in the future he would go to prison.
