A woman was taken to hospital by police after the fire at Ty Nant car park off Nant Hall Road just after 8pm last night.
Onlookers described the drama as firefighters spent almost an hour battling the blaze.
The woman was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd where she was treated for burn injuries.
The North Wales Fire and Rescue Service say the fire was started deliberately.
A woman who witnessed the incident but did not want to be named said: “I went into my back garden and could see black smoke coming from town so thought I would take a look.
“A car was fully ablaze on the car park at the back of the big church and the firefighters were struggling to get it under control.
“There was a woman there who looked like it was her car as she was struggling to walk and her back was bright red and it looked like she had lost some of her hair.
“She was then taken away from the scene and that’s all I saw.”
Another described hearing the car “exploding three times.”
The car was left completely gutted as a result of the fire.
A North Wales Police spokesman said: “We attended a fire just after 8pm. There were concerns for a woman’s safety and she was taken to hospital by police. She had sustained burns.”
A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 8.01pm to reports of a car fire on Nant Hall Road.
“One pump from Prestatyn attended. The fire was out at 8.56pm. The cause of the fire was deliberate.”
