John Amos, 27 was sentenced to eight years in prison

A man who raped an “emotionally fragile” woman while she was asleep has been jailed for eight years.
John Amos, 27, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday for sentencing after entering a guilty plea.
The court heard that Amos, of Prince Street, Newport , committed the offence on July 14.
The court heard how the victim, who was described as a “vulnerable woman”, was woken by the defendant raping her.
Prosecutor Michael Jones said: “He couldn’t stop himself when he was having sex with her. He said he knew it was wrong.
“Whilst doing this, he thought he should not be doing this. It was wrong.”

'Lost myself'

A victim impact statement was read out in court by Mr Jones.
He said: “She described that she tried to block out what had happened to her.
“She tries to find positives but she finds it hard.
“She doesn’t feel clean and she questions her relationships with other people now.”
The statement added: “I feel I’ve completely lost myself. I feel like I’m just existing at the moment.”

'You were a rapist'

Amos was jailed for eight years. His name will appear on the sex offender’s register for life.
He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge and comply with a restraining order.
Jailing Amos, Recorder IWL Jones said: “The victim in this case was a vulnerable woman.
“You did it for your own selfish, sexual gratification and for no other reason.
“In the early hours of July 14, you were a rapist.”
