A 26-year-old man who wanted to be “boss” in his relationship was jailed for six months under a new law designed to stop domestic bullies.
A court heard Kelvin Grimshaw’s girlfriend had been petrified of him
Grimshaw, of Sandbach, in Cheshire, pleaded guilty to a charge that between December 29 and June 6 at Abergele and elsewhere he engaged in controlling or coercive behaviour when in an intimate relationship. He also admitted two common assaults on June 6 at Abergele.
District judge Gwyn Jones at Llandudno court said a WhatsApp message from Grimshaw to the “vulnerable” mother-of-two in May had indicated he wasn’t prepared to change his ways “There’s been a persistent pattern of threats over a long period.
You still have great difficulty in coming to terms with the fact the relationship was so unhealthy,” the judge told him.
A five-year restraining order was imposed. He mustn’t approach addresses in the Abergele area.
Judge Jones praised police for an “extremely extensive” probe. “You treated her as if she were your property, that she should do what you told her to do at your complete whim and discretion,” the judge said.
“She may have started the relationship in the hope it was going to be a good and loving relationship but it became quite clear you always wanted to be regarded as the ‘boss,’ treating and dealing with her as you felt appropriate.”
Grimshaw had taken away from her “any basis of independence” and she lived in fear. “The victim was too terrified to do anything. The children of the relationship were present,” he added. Judge Jones said Grimshaw used force on his partner and there were marks on her upper arm.
Prosecutor James Neary said Grimshaw’s partner described in a statement how she had £3,000 but he used it to fund his cannabis smoking, and he was “horrible” and insulting to her, leaving her feeling “trapped”.
They had lived together but he would shout and not let her out by herself.
Mr Neary said police had arrested Grimshaw after the family visited Llandudno in a car.
His partner had told Grimshaw she didn’t want to be with him and she screamed at members of the public to phone the police. The defendant was, she said, “hammered” and abusive to her.
Defence solicitor Huw Roberts said Grimshaw didn’t accept all the allegations made against him.
The relationship ended on June 6, he was now working in the scrap metal business, and he hadn’t drunk anything, the solicitor added.
