A COURT has heard how a grandmother's life has been "shattered" after a drunk, naked and bleeding teenager broke into her house in the middle of the night and tried to rape her.
The woman — in her 80s — woke to find the intruder on top of her, kissing her and trying to have sex with her.
Swansea Crown Court heard how the woman screamed out in terror — only for a second teenager to appear in her bedroom.
However, this second intruder pulled the attacker away — and apologised to the victim.
Police were called and found a pair of blood soaked underpants in the living room of the property in the Neath area. The victim was described by officers as being in a "distressed and shocked state".
The court heard that the person who had dragged the attacker out of the house subsequently went to police and told them that he couldn't keep what had happened a secret.
The attacker, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had previously pleaded guilty to attempted rape when he appeared in the dock for sentencing.
The court heard details of a statement from the victim's son in which he said his mum had been a "fiercely independent woman" who was proud of living alone — but that the late-night attack had "ruined her life" and left her scared to be on her own in her own home.
He said his mother had brought up her family in the house and had happy memories of the place with her children and grandchildren — but that those had all been "tarnished" by what had happened.
He added that his mum's world had been "shattered".
The court heard that on the day in question the teenager had drunk two bottles of vodka and six cans of cider — and taken cannabis and cocaine — with his mother and other relatives and friends.
He had then had sex with one of this mother's friends a number of times — something that had caused a "commotion" in the house — and left the property in an intoxicated and sexually aroused state to commit the offence.
Susan Ferrier, for the defendant, said the teenager understood his behaviour had been "abhorrent" and "dreadful", and said he wanted to apologise to his victim.
She said her client had witnessed domestic abuse in the family when growing up, and lacked "boundaries".
She added: "In his own words, he said 'nobody can hate me more than I hate myself'."
Judge Peter Heywood said he accepted the defendant was a young man with a "whole host of problems" but he told him he had "effectively ruined" the rest of his victim's life.
He sentenced the teenager to four years in a young offenders institution, and told him he would be on the sec offenders register for the rest of his life.
