A cricket match was halted when a police chase invaded a cricket ground in Cardiff .
South Wales Police have arrested five men in connection with alleged driving offences following a pursuit through the Gabalfa and Llandaff areas of the city.
Police were called at around 2.30pm on Friday and officers and the police helicopter were dispatched to the area.
Sirens and the police helicopter could be heard as families enjoyed the afternoon sunshine in Hailey Park, one parent said.
Five arrested
A grey BMW which was abandoned in Llandaff has been recovered by police.
A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: “Police have arrested five males in connection with driving offences following a pursuit through the Gabalfa and Llandaff areas of Cardiff.
“The males were arrested a short time later.”
Radyr Cricket Club tweeted on Friday afternoon: “Game currently stopped due to police invasion! Helicopter here and police taken away 6 in cuffs – not players. Action packed don’t miss out.”
Peter Clegg, who captained the side for Radyr Cricket Club on Friday against Marylebone Cricket Club, said he’d never seen anything like it before.
He said the players and spectators could see the police helicopter, before around a dozen uniformed police officers ran across the ground at the cricket club and into the next field.
“Play stopped. Everyone was more interested with what they were doing”, he said.
The cricket match was halted for around five minutes before officers came back to the ground with the arrested persons in handcuffs.
Peter, 47, said the game had been a particularly special one as they were playing arguably the most famous cricket club in the world in MCC, who later won the match by 40 runs.
Peter added: “It was quite a prestigious game. I’ve never seen that before.”
