A WOMAN jumped into the canal in a bid to escape from police.
Officers went to the Richmond Court hostel for homeless people in Spital Walk, Chester, following reports that a woman from Wrexham had breached a restraining order.
When the officers arrived at about 8.20pm on Wednesday the woman jumped into the canal and attempted to swim across to try to evade capture.
Witnesses to the incident said that the woman was screaming: “I’m not going back to jail.”
Firefighters from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service used a boat to rescue her and threw her a rope before she was passed into the care of the paramedics and was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital. A member of the public also helped during the rescue.
A 31-year-old woman was subsequently arrested on suspicion of breaching a restraining order.
The woman is not a resident of Richmond Court and a restraining order has been placed ordering her not go near there.
She was taken into police custody.
