The body of a man was found near the aqueduct in Chirk last night.
The police, fire and ambulance services were spotted in the area at about 9pm last night.
The identity of the body has not yet been released, but police say the death is not being treated as suspicious.
A North Wales Police spokesman said: "Shortly after 8.50pm last night, North Wales Police and other emergency services attended a location close to the aqueduct in Chirk near Wrexham where they discovered the body of an adult man.
"He was pronounced dead at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.
"North Wales Police are not treating his death as suspicious and the matter has been passed to HM Coroner."
Chirk county councillor Terry Evans said: “I saw police taking photos at the scene.
“Our thoughts go out to the family of the deceased wherever they are.”
Locals took to social media last night to ask what was going on as the emergency service operation continued.
A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called shortly after 9pm to the river near Chirk Bank. An emergency ambulance attended the scene.”
A North Wales Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: “We were called at 8.59pm and sent one fire engine from Wrexham to the scene. We were assisting the police.”
