These photographs show the scale of litter and fly-tipping on Cardiff’s streets.
After our story about public anger over city litter on Monday, we sent two photographers out on the streets to look at the state of the streets.
And the resulting images are shocking.
They went to areas including Riverside, Grangetown, Tremorfa and Butetown.
And they found flytipped building materials, dumped toilets, piles of cans left on street furniture, ripped open rubbish bags, piles of dumped trash in back lanes, streets dotted with litter and much more.
Last night and today, scores more people contacted Cardiff council to report litter, ripped open rubbish bags and to complain about the state of the city.
@cardiffcouncil @MarkDrakeford @KevinBrennanMP Another standard day on cowbridge road. Embarrassing and disgusting
Louise Tambini of Keep Wales Tidy, who also volunteers with Cardiff’s Rivers Group which collects litter, said that the council should not get the blame.
Ms Tambini said: “People need to take responsibility.
“We have wonderful green spaces in Cardiff. We are very blessed
“And when the weather is nice, people go out to enjoy them and think they are ok to leave their rubbish where it is.
@cardiffcouncil Rubbish situation is getting a bit out of hand, these bags should only be filled with recycling..
“And that is just not acceptable. If people can take it to the park, they can take it home
“I don’t think it is the local authority’s fault.
“They have limited resources. It is a waste of their resources to litter pick.
“People want resources spent on schools and hospitals not on paying people to pick up the stuff they leave behind.
“Certainly from the Rivers Group point of view, we see less rubbish in Cardiff
“But then in the summer, every year, it is the same thing, particularly in Pontcanna Fields and Blackweir where the students congregate - not that it is all their fault.
“People go, have a few drinks and then forget they caused the mess in first place.
She said that rubbish on the streets in Cardiff seemed worse because of the density of the population.
And she said it would be far worse if it wasn’t for the scores of volunteer litter pickers who clear up in the city.
She said: “It perhaps seems worse in Cardiff because there are so many people here.
“There are thousands of volunteers across Wales. If it wsan’t for them it would be a lot worse.”
Speaking on Monday, Cardiff councillor Bob Derbyshire said the city was looking at a number of initiatives including extending cleansing times at weekends.
He said: “I can tell you that we will cracking down by issuing fines for littering, flytipping and incorrect presentation of waste bags. We have taken some people to court over the past few weeks for this and they’ve had fines and costs of more than £300 set against them.
“As well as being a lot stronger on enforcement we are also creating a special team to help deep-clean our neighbourhoods. This team will work with community groups to make our streets cleaner.
“This is an issue that we all need to get involved in. Parents need to lead by example showing their children that littering is unacceptable. If we want a cleaner environment then we all need to play our part.”
Tidal Sidings, Cardiff. Continuous fly tipping. @swpolice not interested. Maybe @cardiffcouncil? #itsamess
Cardiff councillor Ramesh Patel said that many of the problems on Cowbridge Road East were wrongly perceived as being in Canton.
He said: "The problems that people are talking about are in Riverside, not in Canton.
"As soon as we are informed about it, we deal with it."
