Thieves have stolen pregnant dachshunds and puppies worth nearly £20,000 from an owner and breeder.
Julie Knight said she was devastated at the theft of her “precious girls” and four puppies which were not weaned and are likely to die.
'Puppies will die without their mother'
A safe containing £1,000 and family jewellery were also taken in the raid, in the village of Grovesend near Swansea , on Saturday, July 23 as well as Julie’s Mercedes car which was found abandoned two streets away later that day.
The theft happened sometime between 3.30 and 5.10pm on July 23 when Julie,58, popped out to look at some land with daughter Lisa. When they returned they saw Julie’s Mercedes car gone and the front door swinging open.
“My girls Fraya and Angel are both pregnant. They are my beloved pets and were about to become first time mothers,” said Julie, who estimated the total value of the stolen dogs, puppies and unborn pups was around £25,000.
“The four puppies stolen were only eight days old. They are going to die without their mother Cleo, who the thieves left. I don’t care about the money or the safe or the car. That’s just a lump of metal. But my girls are irreplaceable. The mother of the stolen pups is going berserk. She is very upset and had to sleep in bed with me last night.”
The licensed dachshund breeder, who has bred and shown prize winning dogs over 34 years, believes she was targeted. She says the dogs, puppies and 11 unborn puppies were worth around £1.500 each, around £19,500 in total.
Dogs were due to give birth any day
“When we got back I saw the front door open and the car gone. They had smashed open the back door and inside my other dogs were crying. “I ran upstairs and the adult girls due to have babies were gone from my bedroom where they had been sleeping.
“In the other room the mother of the puppies was crying. I think they went to pick her up too and she went for them. “My two other dachshunds Layla and Lola were in the living room very quiet and subdued. They knew something was wrong.”
The two thieves, both men, were caught on Julie’s CCTV camera which she says showed one of them return three times to the house to take take more things.
“You can see him (on the CCTV) carrying my dogs out in a washing basket with wet clothes in, They took that too. They took the puppies out in an old cookery basket they found in a cupboard under the stairs and they went through my wardrobes too.
“The third time he came back to take the safe and my car keys. I feel invaded. I am hoping they will just give up the dogs. They will be too hot to handle now we have reported them and it is on social media.
'Dog theft is rife'
Julie said the safe contained family heirlooms including her mother’s wedding and engagement rings. “How dare they? This is a small village and you don’t expect things like this.Animal theft is rife. I just want my beloved girls back.”
The two pregnant dachshunds are described as chocolate dapple coloured while two of the puppies are black and two are tan reds. Julie has enlisted the help of dachshund owners and clubs across Wales and the UK to spread the word and details of the theft has been posted on social media.
