A man who attacked his partner in a "drunk rage" with a glass beer bottle has been jailed for three years and four months.
Paul Hibbs, 44, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday after pleading guilty to wounding with intent.
Hibbs, of West Town Lane, Bristol, appeared in court after the incident in Conway Road,Cardiff , on June 23.
Prosecutor David Pugh said three aggravating factors of the incident included the presence of children, the location of the incident being at Hibbs’ former partner’s home and the fact it was committed while the defendant was under the influence of alcohol.
"A serious, dangerous and nasty incident"
The court heard how Hibbs – who worked in the photography and animation field and had no previous convictions – caused four lacerations to the head and a wound to the forehead of his former partner with a glass beer bottle when reacting to the news that she was looking to end their relationship.
Hashim Salman, for the defence, said the defendant had a “clean character” and was an “intelligent and hardworking man”.
He said: “The incident was a serious, dangerous and nasty incident. The defendant himself appreciates that fully.
“Nevertheless, your honour knows that the incident was wholly out of character for this defendant.
“The defendant has clearly demonstrated full and sincere remorse. The defendant accepts full responsibility for what he did.
“When Mr Hibbs was shown photographs of injuries sustained by the victim, he described himself as having felt completely disgusted and ashamed of himself, accepting that he acted in a cowardly way.”
The court also heard that a previous partner of Hibbs had corresponded with the court to express her surprise at the incident.
"There is, in my opinion, real, genuine and deep remorse"
Judge Paul Thomas QC said: “Wounding with intent is always a serious matter, particularly against a woman in a domestic setting.
“You reacted to the news, no doubt devastating news from your point of view, that your partner was looking to end your relationship with great and unjustified violence.
“You attacked her in a drunk rage with a glass beer bottle, hitting her several times with it.
“It was a very frightening experience for her, especially because it was in her own home.
“There was also an aggravating factor that her children were in the house at the time, children that I have no doubt that you are extremely fond of, and they will clearly have been distressed by hearing their mother screaming as she did.”
The judge added that there was no history of domestic violence, and that it appeared to be a “one-off”.
He added: “You couldn’t cope with the break-down of that relationship.
“The important factors, apart from your clean character, are most importantly your guilty plea.
“There is, in my opinion, real, genuine and deep remorse exhibited by you.
“It is clear that you have sought professional help, not just as a cosmetic exercise to impress a judge.”
Hibbs was jailed for three years and four months, but was told he would serve half of that sentence, and a restraining order was put in place for five years to ban him from contacting the complainant.
He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £170 on release.
