Motorists parking near the controversial new mirrored letters at Pen y Gwryd, Nant Gwynant, returned to find they had been fined

Visitors to Snowdonia got more than they bargained for when they returned to their cars to discover they’d been fined.
Around 20 vehicles parked near the new huge mirrored letters at Pen y Gwryd, Nant Gwynant, were slapped with fixed penalty notices for flouting parking rules.
The controversial letters, measuring four metres high by 11 metres wide, spell out “Epic” and are aimed at promoting adventure tourism in the area.
But one man who drove through and spotted the fines yesterday (July 26) said: “There must have been about 20 cars with tickets.
“The ticket machine is not easy to spot.
“They could use a new big sign to point out where it is.”
Gwynedd Council has come in for criticism in the past for issuing dozens of fines at a time to people who park their cars on the side of the A4086 near Capel Curig.

A Gwynedd Council spokesman said: “For most of the year there are plenty of parking spaces in this part of Snowdonia.
“However, during peak holiday periods, demand exceeds the number of available spaces and unfortunately some motorists chose to flout the parking restrictions.
“As a council, we encourage motorists to use the car parks at Penypass and the various carparks in Llanberis, and to use the Sherpa bus services to get around the National Park.
“Council civil enforcement officers routinely patrol parking flashpoints to ensure that vehicles are parked safely and legally.
“Parking tickets are only issued to drivers who ignore the law.
He added: “Anyone who believes they have been issued a ticket unfairly can lodge an appeal with by following the advice on their ticket.”
