A SHOPLIFTER with 176 previous offices who stole a pair of jeans from a Llanelli charity shop plans to offer a donation to make amends, a court has heard.
While appearing before Llanelli Magistrates' Court, Jeremy Andrew Pegler pleaded guilty to stealing G-Star Raw jeans belonging to Ty Hafan Charity Shop in Stepney Street.
The court heard at 3.15pm on June 6, the 38-year-old, of Granby Close in Morfa, had gone into the store and spotted the jeans, which he then took into the changing room — before walking out of the store shortly after.
A staff member went to check the rail where the jeans had been displayed and discovered they had not been put back, and checked the changing rooms to see if anything had been left, but it had not.
Police were then called and officers attended Pegler's home, carried out a search and recovered the item. He was then arrested and interviewed.
He explained to officers he had been in the shop with his girlfriend who had paid for items of her own at the counter, and said he "genuinely forgot" he had not paid for them.
By committing the crime, Pegler breached a conditional discharge imposed for shoplifting imposed in March.
The court heard his record shows 176 offences committed — 84 for dishonesty.
Mitigating, Richard Morgan said: "He had gone to Ty Hafan shop with his girlfriend and she had made legitimate purchases on her bank card of two separate items and he thought she was paying for the jeans.
"He should have made sure that was the position, but it was not premeditated.
"He had a relative who suffered from cancer and would not do anything to harm a cause like Ty Hafan.
"He wants to pay compensation for the item and also offer a £30 donation to the charity."
Pegler was given a 12 month conditional order with a 30 day rehabilitation activity requirement.
He has been fined £95, £85 costs, £85 victim surcharge and £7.99 compensation.
