An 83-year-old woman has been conned out of thousands of pounds after scammers convinced her she would be sent to prison because she hadn’t paid her tax.
A caller managed to convince the 83-year-old she would be sent to prison
The elderly lady, from the Abergavenny area, was conned out of £3,000 after being targeted over the phone by fraudsters claiming to be representatives from the HMRC tax office.
The caller managed to convince the pensioner she would be sent to prison because she hadn’t paid her tax and encouraged her to buy thousands of pounds worth of vouchers.
The scammers then called her back and asked for the codes on the vouchers - essentially stealing her money and leaving her feeling distressed and upset by the incident.
Officers have now seized the vouchers and are at the address supporting the victim.
Gwent Police said they have received a number of similar reports from concerned residents who have also had calls from fraudsters claiming to be representatives of the HMRC tax office.
In each case the caller demands money and uses threatening behaviour by saying to the victim enforcement officers will take action if they fail to pay.
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: "We are keen to remind residents that they should not give out personal or financial information to anyone that they do not completely trust, and that anyone in any doubt at all should seek professional advice before parting with any money.
"Issues of this nature can be reported to Gwent Police by calling 101 or by contacting your local council’s trading standards department or report it to Action Fraud on 03001232040."
