POLICE logs recorded sexual, violent and theft-related crimes on or near university campuses in Swansea, it has emerged.
More than 90 offences were recorded by South Wales Police in the postcode areas of three campuses over a period of two years and eight months.
University leaders however say the data is not definitive and say students' experience of the city is generally very positive.
The data, released by South Wales Police under freedom of information laws, show that since April 2013, nine crimes have been recorded on or near University of Wales Trinity St David's (UWTSD) Mount Pleasant Campus.
These include four offences for violence, two theft or handling and one sexual offence. A 'crime-related' incident was also recorded.
By far the highest number of recorded offences were in the SA2 8PP postcode area, shared by Swansea University's Singleton Campus. These were for 61 theft or handling offences and another ten for violence. One sexual offence was recorded
The University's Bay Campus, which opened in September this year, is in the same postcode area where eight recorded crimes, all for theft or handling, have been recorded since April 2013.
A spokesman for South Wales Police said the force and its partners run regular operations aimed at keeping students safe.
He added: "Swansea has consistently received high ratings from students in surveys about their overall university experience."
A UWTSD spokesman said: "We note that these figures are not exclusively related to incidents on our campus but include the wider postcode area. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David takes the safety of its students and staff very seriously. Incidents on our Swansea campuses are very rare, as demonstrated by comparisons against other postcode areas in Swansea."
A spokesman for Swansea University said: "Our students' experiences of living in Swansea are generally extremely positive. They voted Swansea as UK University of the Year in last year's WhatUni awards. Swansea was also ranked as the fifth safest place to live in the UK in the Complete University Guide.
"Even so, the University is committed to providing a safe learning and social environment for its staff and students. There is a police officer based on the campus and a Police Community Support Officer on hand to advise on crime prevention."
