A Gwynedd man posed as a law student in California and then a rich American during internet contact with two young girls, a court heard.
Robert Daniel James, 30, was jailed for 18 months after continuing to ask girls to make indecent images of themselves despite learning their true ages
Robert Daniel James, 30, of Uwch y Maes, Dolgellau , pleaded guilty to attempting to cause or incite a child of 13 to be involved in pornography after making contact on Facebook.
He was jailed for 18 months and must register as a sex offender for ten years.
A sexual harm prevention order was also made for ten years.
Judge Geraint Walters, sitting at Caernarfon crown court, told him: "The facts of the case make disturbing reading. During August 2014 you encouraged two girls to pose in a sexual way and to send such photographs to you. Neither in the event did that, as you know the mother of one of them discovered her daughter's activities with you.
"I accept for the purposes of sentencing when you first communicated with those girls you thought they were very much older than in fact they were. The evidence plainly establishes that.
"But there came a time you became aware that they were much younger and children."
Judge Walters said James had created two false identities and his profile was intended to impress and attract.
"Using the internet to groom young impressionable children is becoming altogether too common," the judge remarked."Inviting young people to send scantily-clad pictures, or ones in a state of undress, again is becoming very common place."
He said James had a "troubling" personality.
Defence counsel Elen Owen said James had been bullied, isolated, drinking heavily "and living in a complete fantasy world." He was ashamed and very sorry.
The lawyer said he had requested a "selfie" from one girl and wanted her to wear red lipstick.
The second girl portrayed herself as older than she was in reality but James had been told that they lied.
"He should have been far more careful," the barrister accepted.
James had mental health problems at the time and had been assessed by a psychiatrist. He was an alcoholic and had been advised to move away from Dolgellau.
Ms Owen added :"He needs assistance and the probation service are the people to give him it."
