A DOG lover has hit out at her local council after receiving a fine for letting her pets off their leads while out on a walk.
Sharon Hayes, 59, said she strongly disagrees with a fine she was issued whilst walking her two collies Jake and Alfie, aged 11 and 12, on a field in Maesdu Road because she feels signage prohibiting dogs off leads is not clearly visible.
Ms Hayes, who lives in Llandudno, said she noticed she was being followed by two men, who approached her and told her she would have to pay a fine of £75.
She said: “It was raining, I had my hood up and I’m looking out for traffic - the signage is placed in such a position to entrap innocent dog walkers. You can't even see the signs when you come up from Cwm Road, it's really inadequate.
"They saw me picking up their poo, the law should be about people who are misbehaving and not targeted at everybody so they can make money out of it. I'm not going to be paying a £75 fine, I'd rather go to court. It's a ludicrous amount of money.”
Ms Hayes wrote to Cllr Ronnie Hughes, deputy leader of Conwy County Borough Council, about the situation.
Councillor Hughes said he had received correspondence from Ms Hayes and had submitted a letter of appeal to Conwy Council to review the fine she was issued.
A spokesperson for the council said: "The dog control orders came into effect in 2012 to oblige dog owners to clean up dog faeces; to keep dogs on a lead; to put dogs on a lead when asked to by an authorised officer and also to prohibit dogs from specific locations.
"Maesdu Road Recreation Ground is a designated dogs on leads area as part of these dog control orders.
"Kingdom Security Ltd work on behalf of the council to issue fixed penalty notices to people who drop litter or don’t clean up after or control their dog. They fulfil a very important function and work to a very high and professional standard and we aim to ensure high standards are maintained."
