Thieves stole laptops and attempted to take a safe during a Christmas Day break-in at a church in Caerphilly.
Vandals forced their way into the back of St Martin's Church on Friday, but dumped the safe in the car park.
A resident spotted it at about 01:00 GMT on Boxing Day and police were called.
Rev Mark Greenaway-Robbins said the incident was "very upsetting" but parishioners had offered their support.
He said minimal damage was caused and he was thankful the thieves did not get away with the safe, which contained precious church records.
"It's understandably very upsetting. But the police have been superb and parishioners have rallied around so that's the nice thing about it all," he said.
Mike Todd, who is a member of the congregation and helped make the building secure again, described the incident as "despicable".
"No-one's been hurt and there's only a small amount of loss but it's a harsh act a church being broken into on Christmas Day," he added.
Gwent Police is investigating.
